Virgin Media broadband isn't famous for its cheap internet. It has instead built a reputation for providing the fastest fibre in the UK, with speeds of up to 300Mb. And now it has announced price rises that will affect both new and existing customers.
If you already have Virgin Media broadband then you're likely to see an increase of between £1.99 and £3.99. But the good news is that you'll have 30 days from receiving your written notification of the rise to cancel and take up another broadband deal. Keep reading to see what your options are to avoid the November hike.
And for new customers, we've already seen an incremental rise in its superfast fibre broadband deals across the board. For example, its cheapest tariff – VIVID 50 – has gone up by a £1 a month. While the leaps on its more expensive packages are even greater – the Mix TV Bundle with VIVID 100 broadband is now £6 a month more expensive, or £72 a year.
If you're in the market for a new broadband deal, but these price rises have put you off going with Virgin, then below we'll tell you which providers will give you a cheaper price.
Cheapest fibre broadband deal
Vodafone Unlimited Fibre 38 | 18 months | Up to 38Mb | Line rental inc. | No TV | FREE upfront| £25pm
Until only a few weeks ago, Vodafone broadband kept its best prices back for people who use the provider as their mobile phone network. But no longer, and that means Vodafone is now in pole position as the UK's cheapest fibre provider. You don't pay a penny upfront (compared to Virgin's £20 activation fee) and then it's a flat £25 per month.
£44 cheaper than Virgin VIVID 50 over first year
Best value broadband and TV deal
NOW TV Combo: Fab Fibre with Entertainment Month Pass | 12 months | Up to 38Mb | Line rental inc. | 110+ channels | £44 activation| £29.99pm
If you're into your box sets and long running TV series, then NOW TV's Entertainment Pass is a must. As well as including Sky Atlantic (that's the Game of Thrones channel everybody) among its 100 channels, it also gives you instant access to over 250 box sets. The broadband connection may not be as fast as Virgin's VIVID 100 package and no calls are included, but this is brilliant for box set bingers wanting broadband.

Best value broadband and TV deal for sport fans
BT Unlimited Infinity 1 with Starter pack + BT Sport | 12 months | Up to 52Mb | Weekend calls | 80+ channels | £69.99 upfront| £38.99pm
Even though it now costs £3.50 a month to add the BT Sports channels to your Starter TV bundle (it was a free added extra until this month) this is still a great deal if you want to catch live Premiership football action this season. It may not look it from the above, but it becomes far tastier when you throw in BT's £125 Reward Card – a pre-paid Mastercard you can use for instore and online purchases.

I'm a Virgin Media customer? What can I do?
If you currently have your broadband through Virgin Media, you should be notified in writing very shortly about the price rise (if you haven't already). On average, Virgin says that prices will increase by 4.7% – you can expect to see your bill go up somewhere between £1.99 and £3.99 from November.
But the good news is that you're not lumbered with the hike. Virgin has confirmed to TechRadar that you have the option to cancel your contract within 30 days from receiving your letter/email informing you of the price changes. If you do so, you will not incur the usual early disconnection fee for cancelling. So you won't be penalised for checking out our best broadband deals page and grabbing a better price.
